What Makes Full Moon Tours Special: Kayaking in #WilmingtonNC

Updated: May 21, 2023

Ethereal full moon paddles evoke the selenophilia within us...that is...the intellectual and artistic attraction to the moon. With Wilmington Outdoor Adventures, you will witness the sunset and the moonrise all within one magical kayak tour. Greenfield Lake turns orange, pink and red and then fades into the moon's glow as the stars twinkle above the cypress dome ecosystem. This is possible once in June, twice in August, and once in September during 2023.

The Strawberry Moon is the last full moon of the spring and is a celebration of the approaching summer. It is the perfect time to set intentions for the second half of the year. The Strawberry Moon also happens to be a Supermoon, meaning it will appear larger than the other full moons. The name is derived from Native Americans marking when wild strawberries are ready for harvest in North America.

The Sturgeon Moon is named after the ancient fish residing right here in the Cape Fear River Basin. The Cape Fear River is home to two sturgeon species: the Atlantic Sturgeon and the Short-nosed Sturgeon, both of which are endangered. Sturgeon have been around for over 200 million years! Honor the Sturgeon Moon by accomplishing ambitions, because like the sturgeon, you can adapt and persevere through your personal hurdles in life.

The Full Blue Moon is the last full moon of the summer. Once in a "blue moon" we have a second full moon in the same month. The Blue Moon is shrouded in mystery, magic and folklore, likely because it doesn't happen every year. The term "blue moon" was first written by Shakespeare to mean "rare" over 400 years ago. We can take time during the Full Blue Moon to recognize all the rare and precious things in our lives.

The first full moon of Autumn 2023, the Harvest Moon, is an embodiment of second chances. Farmers used its bright light to harvest their crops at night. It represents a time of transition, intuition, and new beginnings, as the crops are ready to be harvested before winter. #Kayaking as the Harvest Moon rises would be the perfect time to think about how you may want to begin on a new slate, or to simply gaze at the #fullmoon occurring nearest to the autumnal equinox.
